Architects must twist and turn to make nature come alive
The World Congress for Architects - UIA has come to Copenhagen this year, and visitors from more than 100 countries have come to see the cream of Danish architecture. The sustainable element has become part of the construction industry’s DNA, and it is also reflected in the UIA program. However, a new crisis threatens to once again change our approach to construction.
Copenhagen is like a greenhouse where architects plant their greatest and newest ideas into the soil of construction. The city is nurtured and pruned so that it becomes a root system of life with space, light, and function. Stemming from institutions such as the Royal Danish Academy, architects’ best ideas spread throughout the entire country. On a summer day in July, the results of their e orts are exhibited in newly erected pavilions around the capital.
The question is how to set quotas for havens for bees and other wildlife in shiny new buildings. Perhaps cracks need to be made in the concrete to make room for new trees, and maybe buildings need to take a step back to allow nature to reclaim its messy and unpredictable perfection. What would the architect actually say to that?
